APOLLO SATURN ROCKET, PROJECT SWORD - CENTURY 21 - HONG KONGCentury 21 – tall plastic rocket in 3 stages. Plastic battery op rocket , this craft has flashing lights and a spring-loaded parachuting nose-cone. On its main body appear two transfers stating ' Apollo Saturn' .It looks like a big Cape- Kennedy- Set rocket. On the base is written ' A 21 Toy ' with the familiar tunnel-like circles, together with 'Century 21 Toys Ltd Made in Hong Kong'.
The box is a long narrow rectangular two parter. The lid is of thinner card with the base being much thicker. Two pieces of thick card inner- packaging hold the rocket in place at either end of the box. 'Star Features' are 'Ejectable space capsule with parachute, battery operated, hand steerable front wheel, three stage rocket, lights at rear, clips on fins.' It states that it's 'Made in Hong Kong for Century 21 Toys Limited'. On the two longest sides appears the words 'This super badge - Sword Commander - free inside, plus official manual, Project SWORD, collect the series for other great SWORD badges, Century 21 Limited'. The Commander badge is red.

The tricycle vehicle has wide rear side fins and a blue upright fin. A yellow astronaut, looking like a biker with helmet, sits in a cockpit behind a clear plastic windscreen. There is a small red spark window behind the cockpit. The number 7 is printed on the nose. The cycle look is emphasised on the box art which shows the rocket travelling around a race track. 10 ins

This is a variation of the Alps Space Raider with the addition of the pilot behind the windscreen and the extra vertical tailfin. The size of the driver completely alters the scale of the vehicle. Circa 1953

BOOSTER ROCKET, PROJECT SWORD - CENTURY 21 - HONG KONGA long plastic battery op rocket with its middle encircled by large white plastic ‘fuel’ pods which are detachable. The ship has forward and reverse motion, tail lights and a cool silver ejecting nose jet with its own landing gear/wheels ( you may come across this on its own). 'Made in Hong Kong' appears on its base.
The box is tiny compared to the size of the fully set-up toy. Nevertheless the artwork is great, with a white and red painiting of the rocket whizzing across space. 'Star Features' are the ' Ejectable nose module, battery operated, forward and reverse control, tail light, official SWORD decals'. As standard it states that its 'Made in Hong Kong for Century 21 Toys Limited.' The cover doesn't refer to thje badge or manual, only the four sides of the lid. It's referred to as the 'Space Captains badge', but the picture of the badge simply states Captain. The full badge list appears including astronaut.

This rocket has a classic retro design consistent with the early Buck Rogers films: sweeping bird like wings and top fin, webbed fin, small tin dome and character graphics derived straight from the Sunday comic strips. Widely on sale in late 1934.
Printed on the bottom of the toy is a picture of Buck Rogers and it reads: Buck Rogers 25th Century, Louis Marx & Co 200-5th Ave NY USA Patented March 15, 1927 1, 621,266 with the early Marx toy logo. 24cm

A tin version of Buck sits on top holding a gun mounted in an open cockpit. Features sparking exhaust, space sound, all tin construction with detailed, multi-colored lithography and embossed parts. It is a tinplate wind up rocket with a propeller at the front. The most striking feature is the stylised red and yellow tin representation of the rocket's flame trail. It is hinged for storage. The toy has a spark window with red cover at the back to provide real sparks.
Possibly made in Germany or Eastern Europe.
The rocket is intended to hang from a string in the manner of similar dirigible or airship toys. Zeppelin. The box is a plain card one with a paper label.

Other versons have been seen in this box but here the litho on the toy corresponds with the box artwork - eg portholes. Box and spaceship combinations seem to be random: Box has No 8, toy has No 9. etc. Two litho variations shown.

DOCKING ROCKET - DAIYA - JAPANThis is one of Daiya's realistic looking space toys that reflects the latest developments in NASA space exploration. The wheeled silver tin and plastic battery operated rocket is attached by string to a white plastic Lunar Lander docking module.
The space craft moves forward on three wheels, the rear two providing power. The main space craft tows a secondary capsule behind it and whilst moving, reels in this attachment, this accompanied by suitable 'space rocket noise'. When full docking takes place electrical contacts are engaged and lights flash in the secondary craft. The rocket then releases the capsule on its lead, to trail behind some 8-10 inches and then continues as above, on a repeat routine.
Flashing lights, noise and rotating silver or light blue plastic antenna. The main rocket is 30cm long, the whole toy is 42cm.

FIRE ROCKET X-0077 - YONEZAWA - JAPANThis is a unique rocket design from Yonewawa, a cross between a space rocket and jet plane. The box depicts a pilot sitting under a clear canopy but the toy reveals him perched high above the toy in the open air.
A blue lithographed in friction rocket with red detailing. 38cm long. The large fins resemble wings. Spark windows surround the rear exhaust. Circa 1960. Advances with siren and spark. The spring loaded nose piece launches the plastic astronaut into the air when the rocket bumps into something. This toy may have been inspired by the US X Planes.

Note: In 1951 Marx had released its own in house version of the pre-war rocket. It was believed that the Rocket 5 was followed by the Flasg Gordon version, but newspaper references in late 1951 suggest that it appeared at the same time - or that it was planned at the same time. They released the rocket with "Flash Gordon" printed behind the pilot's head and on the wing.
Current earliest mention is in a November 1951 newspaper advertisement with a poor picture. It was widely on sale in late 1952.

FRIENDSHIP ROCKET #7 - MASUDAYA - JAPANThis is a slight variation of the blue version of the Atom Rocket 7 with a name change and a new box art. One of Masudaya's tin battery operated space ships with a non-fall action. An astronaut pilot sits inside a cockpit with a clear plastic cover. Rear tail fin and two red conical engines on the side. A metal rocker in the base detects edges and alters the direction of the rocket. On the side is an unusual indication of speed: 17,600 MPH.
The box carries Mego Corp wording.

Unusually this rocket has a realistic shape: a long tube with five red tailfins and a litho nose cone with a Gemini capsule litho. There's a large rubber plug at the end for safety. A rectangular red plastic window has been added to the rocket to show off the spark action. Blue and white rings of color with red detailing. 33cm.

HIGH SPEED ROCKET THE MOON ZX-8 - MARUSAN - JAPANThis is an early, iconic space rocket with classic lines. A red and white lithographed tin rocket with silver abd blue trim. Three red tail fins that extend well behind the exhaust. Porthole detailing. Marked THE MOON ZX-8 in a blue strip running the length of the rocket. Collectors often refer to this as the "High Speed Rocket".
The rocket has an unusual propulsion method: there is a string with a hook in the end. The rocket can be suspended and pulled down to allow it to climb back up.
The box art shows the colorful rocket with the wording Rocket Go Into Space. SAN
This is the same pressing as the Marusan UNIVERSAL ROCKET, THE MOON X-1 and ROCKET METEOR.

INTERPLANETARY ROCKET - YONEZAWA - JAPANAn elaborately lithographed tinplate and plastic battery operated rocket. The silver rocket has a small red nose cone and a large yellow plastic rocket motor assembly at the rear that rotates. The rocket has a bump and go action the stops. The rocket rises up and the nose assembly opens to reveal the Apollo capsule. This was an effective attempt to reflect in toy form some of the complexity of the Apollo moon landing program.
